The Practice of Naming the Need

For today’s short action, give yourself a few minutes with the same journal. Write your usual answer when someone asks how you are. Then finish: Today, a more accurate answer would be… A thought, a physical sensation, or “I do not know yet” is a workable beginning.

Name one need behind that answer. Rest, company, help with a task, or time to think may fit. Notice whether your chosen belief makes it difficult even to admit the need. Keep the need and the belief separate: being tired is an observation; “I should never need a break” is a rule you can examine.

Choose a small response within your circumstances. It might be putting a request into words or arranging a few minutes to rest. Write what you predict, try the step when it is practical, and record what happened in the same three lines. A prepared request can remain pending until a suitable time.

Optional deeper reflection: Describe what the need has been costing you and what practical support it may require. Add it to this entry. You do not need another evening routine.
